Civil war in 1930s Spain stirred deep passions: fervent commitment to ideals aroused ardent loves and hatreds. Volunteers arrived in the midst of this turmoil from all parts of the world to join the International Brigades and support the Spanish Republic, many with the cause of freedom burning in their hearts, some with faith in a political system, others, with a wish to help ease the sufferings of those wounded in the conflict. Amongst the volunteers are three young women, as different in character as they are in social class. This novel follows them through the hopes and horrors of war; the challenges and choices, the friendships that are forged and the emotional relationships with the uniquely disparate men they meet. The story both starts and ends 60 years after the war, revealing exactly how these events changed each imperfect individual.
